Expand Tower Ridge?
« Thread started on: Sep 21st, 2003, 12:19am » |

Money was donated some time ago to add more holes to Tower Ridge. Another 18 holes was laid out, too. But there was never enough sponsorship to add 18 more holes. I would like to see this expansion take place. I think there are two things needed to get this accomplished. First we need someone to take charge of getting more sponsorship lined up. Second we need some excitement generated about this expansion. I think the way to get some excitement is to start setting up new holes right away. We can add three of the holes between seven and eight right now. I believe we have received enough sponsorship to put those holes in right now. Lets do it!

I presume any announcement going on air, would be by the club (CVDGO). That would need board approval (3 members). You're the newsletter editor - write something up and submit it for approval! That should move to the board board.
But how does this do anything for the expansion of TR?

Yes please expand Tower. Don't start a new course out by Wal-Mart just expand Tower. By expanding Tower which has lots of room you could have one central area to focus on and would make upkeep more efficent. I find Tower Ridge the most fun the most exercise and the most beautiful of all the courses I've played so far. I think maybe doing something with the Tee boxes would be the only suggestion for improvement I could think of, oh and cut down less trees, remember trees are our friends. I would donate money for the upkeep or expansion of Tower before any other project I can think of. Now I want to say THANK YOU all for creating the Tower Ridge disc golf course and for keeping it up. When I play Tower I marvel at how much has been given for my or our enjoyment.

Hey Unkle Bob. From my perspective if Tower Ridge is to get expanded we need an expansion committee and chairman who will push to get it done. I think you would make a great commitee chairman. I'm ready and willing to be on the commitee and help out, too. I will also "adopt a hole" on the existing 18 as well as sponsoring and "adopting" a hole on the expansion 18. To me "sponsoring" means paying for it, and "adopting" means personally maintaining the hole. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,tick

I think we ought to re-evaluate whether we have that course out at Tower or now the "NEW" one by Wal-Mart. We should decide as a club. But then TOM has said that if we get a course "Someone has to take care of it and that's NOT happening with Tower, so he doesn't see it happening with the other one there..." So...obviously we need to figure out how the club can maintain these courses and keep really good Disc Golf courses around here. I had gotten a sponsorship for the Extra Tower Course and I will probably do the "Adopt-a-hole" thing but I would like to see this money used even if we start out with only a few baskets at a time.

This is a duplication of a comment I made in the Adoption thread: What if we could start working on some new holes this winter? We would have to be kind to the ski tracks (not mess 'em up), but it's a good time to "see" the holes in the woods, mark trees that get cut, and even start doing some cutting.
We could potentially have 4-5 holes ready for tees and baskets when the weather breaks in Spring.
Does anyone want to jump on this wagon?

Please know one should go to tower this winter to work on new holes. This would be a big no no with the county. I know they would not allow us out there.
I myself would like to see the new cource at the new city park but this may take a few years. the board will dicide what way we go, maybe we can do both. I know that we do not have enough help to take care of tower now. I can not see us getting That much more help to take care of two. I hope I am proven wrong. I am sure there will be help to put it in but what happens after that. I would love to be proven wrong. It is nice to see some new people willing to help. Disc On Tom

Tom, I don't see why you say we could not go out to Tower Ridge during the winter, at least to plan for spring work? In fact, as a "multi-use area" I believe we have the right to go walk around for no reason at all if we wish. Actually, I can't imagine any reason why we could not actually do some brush and small tree removal. Why would the county object? Why shouldn't we ask if it would be possible within whatever rules they might set for us?

About being on tower in the winter. I know the county would not want people on the ski trails and if we go out there people would get on them. I will call them and see what they think. Don e-mail me or call me on what you would want me to ask them. You can call them if you would like, it would let you get to know them a little. Maybe I am not right on this but we can find out. Tom

Wow!! For anyone who wasn't at the CVDGO meeting on Mar. 2, the county parks and forestry department is working on an addition to the grant for the Ski Strider's building that would pay half the cost of an expansion to Tower ridge course of another 18 holes. This 18 would intersect the current 18, but start and stop at the new building, which is going to be available for our use. After TRO and before the end of April, we should mark out the additional holes. We could then get an approval of the specific course design from the county, and even start brushing out some holes. It isn't clear when we will hear about an OK or rejection of the application, but if we are ready to move on it, we possibly could have an additional 18 holes before the end of the year.

There is another parking lot. Turn left about 1/4 mile further south on the road and drive in another 1/4 mile. That's where the Ski Striders have a building now, (which is going to be for sale!) and then the new building will be in the opposite corner of that parking lot from where you drive in.

Well an update is way overdue! I was named to chair the expansion course design committe by El Presidente. So I have been spending a lot of time out in the woods trying to figure out how to make it work. But not just me - there are 9 people on the commitee who represent a lot of different perspectives. Well I met with a representative of the county and two horseback riders just yesterday, and I believe we will get a green light to start building the course soon. We will not get everything we want, but we will get a good course. There were some conflicts with use of trails by the horseback riders. So in one area they will use a different route through the woods, and in another area we will be going through the woods. Jack and Troy had a great idea for some holes, west and south of the new building, but we are not going to get an OK on that because of a strong concern about erosion, although they didn't say "never". I think our next 18 out there should go entirely through the woods, and we should use the hills, and we should build in erosion controls from the beginning. But that's a long ways in the future! We did not get the grant $ to buy baskets, however, we are moving ahead with putting in the course, doing everything except the baskets. We could put the bare poles in place, and I believe when we get that far we will be able to get enough donations to buy the baskets and outfit the course. I think we can be playing it with baskets by mid-summer. To do this we must get in there this fall-winter and cut down the dead oaks. Due to oak wilt disease, we cannot cut them after April 1 until July. Watch for the work days to be announced! So come to the annual meeting! Come to work days! We all need to pitch in to get this thing done!
