A new park behind Walmart!
« Thread started on: Sep 21st, 2003, 12:05am » |

There is going to be a new city park behind Walmart. There is a suggestion that it would be a good place for another disc golf course. Does anyone care? Is anyone willing to work on setting up a course? paying for baskets? or concrete for tees? Should there be concrete tees right away on a new course, or maybe play it a while to see if something should be changed? Should money that was donated to add more holes to Tower ridge be used for a new course?

I would like to see Tower Ridge expanded with the money already donated for that project. Would the wal-mart course be just for disc golfing? How much room is there for the park? I'd be happy to donate some time and $$$$ to help with expanding Tower and with upkeep. I feel Tower should be the focus. Plus I don't want to have to say Hey lets do Wal-Mart tonight. I really would like to see Tower expanded. It is such a jewel and needs upkeep. How heavy is the usage that another course is needed?

Walmart and Phelan Park, Menomonie

Hey fellas, I agree with UnkBob. I did inventories at walmarts over the summer, and although we turned it into a disc golf tour, I still would not want to "play walmart"- Ha. I also think it's a good idea to keep the funds with Tower Ridge.
Now be aware of this, In the last year, I started up a general proposal for a new course at Phelan Park in South Menomonie. The park has 200 acres to expand to in a matter of years- great time to start planning now for a professional course, which I have been given a general "ok, yes we will when the park is ready" confirmation, but we need to be a step ahead. The course would take on the name of the "Phelan Park SDGC Disc Golf Course" or something to that effect because the Stout Disc Golf Club would be the main contributors, of course with sponsorship help. From our first year budget proposed to the university, we were funded for 4 discatchers that are now installed between the southcampus dorms. 2 more are approved and will be on their way beginning of next summer. Hence, funding for club equipment is a fairly easy task to come by when you have a good mission and purpose. My overall thoughts being turn Phelan into a multi tee, multi pin placement course that we can share the baskets between stout and Phelan. The club will also have two or more portables available. I have come up with a great power pt presentation that covers disc golf, the pdga, the SDGC, events, our proposed UW-Stout 1 credit PE class-which is looking good, and concluding with Sponsorship info. I would appreciate it if the cvdgo would critique it and give some input.
Also, since I have little experience thus far in course design except the SDGC Skill Shot Course (the on-campus baskets which could use some work), a professional course designer would be needed to meet with the city, parks, whomever to plan out the Phelan expansion and preferably soon. The club in its second year, has limited money in its own account which is currently being invested into club merchandise, so we have no money for a course designer right now. I don't know what resources are available but hopefully you all have some advice or direction.
The park expansion will be furnished more pavillions(clubhouse or whatnot and classroom for the disc golf class), wooden walk paths through swampy areas, planted trees, etc. Once again, this could be a premier course if we can get the city to see it that way right now. This in return will heighten disc golf in the Chippewa Valley ten fold, not to forget to mention the possibilities with the new Wisconsin Clubs' Rating Program - points and benefits (check out the aadgc)!!!! The SDGC looks forward in uniting with the CVDGO, and of course call me whenever there is anything I can do in your neck of the woods or ours.
Disc it,
Jason Hendrickson President SDGC "Working Together to Disc the World through Innovation and Professionalism"
P.S. Sorry if this was so long, but I just had to get it off my back!! Ha. The sad part is there's probably a billion more things I could add. oh well...

After hearing shared opinions, I don't think it would be so bad to put a course in at South Park. Finish up Tower Ridge's 18, work on and devote time to nailing South Park, and then through special fundraising and strategic marketing, the funds will be back in the hands to do the next 18 at Tower. Expanding disc golf to South Park will create more growth of the sport and members (leaders as well) in the Chippewa Valley. Do what's best for the sport! That's my opinion.

when i first heard about the new park behind walmart i went to check it out. i didn't think it was a very good spot for a disc golf course. it was pretty flat and not a lot of trees (if i was looking in the right place).
however, i have thought of a few other places where a new course could be put in. i read a while back that they were planning to develop parts of lowes creek park, possibly put in a baseball field or something. i went out there to check it out and you could definately fit 18 holes somewhere. i was thinking in the middle of the excersice loop. another possible place is the land the city just zoned for park space on the west side (by jeffers road and the county line). i think it's like 52 acres or something. i read they wanted to put in a few softball fields. i haven't been out there, so i don't know what it's like, but it's definately a possibility. another spot would have been pheonix park downtown, but that's pretty much been laid out already. the only spot left would be across madison st (towards the paper mill) in that open area along the river. that only looks big enough for 9 holes though, and i think it'd be a lot of switchbacks because it's such a long narrow piece of land.
to comment on expanding tower to 36 holes, i think it's a good idea, it just depends on where they put them and how it is implemented into the existing course.

Mysteray, You were not in the right place! The property "behind Walmart starts by the street and goes down to Otter creek and all the way out to the Interstate. There is a flat open area of maybe 5-6 acres which is for the dog park, and is getting fenced now, but a lot more wooded and hilly land is available for us to at least propose a course on. Holler, and we'll go there. PS Did you check the links?

i was in the dog park area i guess. i wasn't sure if that was the only part of it or not. if it is that whole area, that seems to be extremely wooded. i would think a lot of clearing would need to be done.
if you're referring to the link to my website, yes, i saw it. thanks for putting that up.

First I have always liked the Idea of an otter creek disc park. (7 miles down stream maybe? ) On the Thursday (3 days after opening) I counted 90+ cars between towers 2 parking lots and the road. For the heck of it I checked out Simon and found 30+ cars. There is no doubt that disc golf has boomed in our area.
That said I think it would be a great idea to look to expand. As always just call when the work needs to be done and I'll be there if I can.
The biggest challenge as always will be finding the funds to build with. Has anyone ever tryed starting a donation box out at tower. It would probably just get broken into but hey may be worth a try.
